Dungeon Siege lấy bối cảnh tại Vương quốc Ehb, một khu vực lớn trên lục địa Aranna với đa dạng các địa hình như sa mạc, đầm lầy, rừng và núi. Bắt đầu trò chơi, ngôi làng làm nông của nhân vật chính bị tấn công bởi một chủng tộc sinh vật có tên là Krug. Nhân vật chính, một người nông dân không có lai lịch được đặt tên bởi người chơi, xông qua bè lũ Krug để đến thị trấn Stonebridge. Người chơi sẽ phải lên đường đi thông báo cũng như kêu gọi sự trợ giúp của các thị trấn gần đó để chống lại mối hiểm họa. Trên đường đi người chơi sẽ chống lại rất nhiều nguy hiểm cũng như gặp gỡ các nhân vật khác nhau và lập nhóm để có thể vượt qua các trận chiến dễ dàng hơn.
