Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee được nhiều người hoan nghênh vì có lối chơi sáng tạo, định hướng nghệ thuật tốt và có các đoạn cắt cảnh hấp dẫn. Đây là tựa game đầu tiên trong chuỗi 5 tựa game của series Oddworld, sau này đến năm Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee được remake thành Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty!

Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee tập trung vào nhân vật có tên là Abe, một nô lệ Mudokon hiền lành tại nhà máy chế biến thịt RuptureFarms. Khi anh ta phát hiện ra rằng chính anh và các đồng đội Mudokon của mình sẽ bị tàn sát, Abe quyết định trốn thoát và giải phóng càng nhiều Mudokons nô lệ càng tốt. Người chơi sẽ vài vai Abe và phải điều khiển anh ta vượt qua nhiều màn giải đố. Cũng như các chướng ngại vật xuất hiện như mìn, rào chắn điện, hố và tất nhiên không thể thiếu những kẻ địch nguy hiểm.
